A Special Night at the Murray County Speedway On a balmy July 6th evening, racers and race fans came together for a great cause. They came together to support the Dominick Bruns memorial fund. The fund was started in 2008 after the death of the couple’s son, Dominick. The missions of the fund is to prevent SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and rebreathing through the education of new parents and families in the area, to better the lives of infants, children, and families through community involvement, and finally to preserve the memory and legacy of Dominick Joseph Bruns. Through this they have already helped educate numerous families and continue to make a difference in the community. First National Bank IMCA Sport Compacts Fireworks being set off before the race gave an explosive start to the feature races. Casey Kumerow in the 18 car had the lead early on in the race. Half way through the race the 28 car of Jason Baune would take the lead. On the final lap an intense battle for the lead ensued between Baune, Kumerow, and the 33 car of Nikkya Betz. While entering turn three, Kumerow was sent on a wild ride. He went off the apron of the turn and proceeded to roll the car. Kumerow would be ok after his wild ride. When all was said and done, it was the 28 car of Jason Baune who would pick up feature win.
Hadley Liquor Pure Stock The Hadley Liquor Pure Stocks looked to follow up an exciting race with a race of their own. The 4Q car of Brent Staab and the 2 car of Mike Bents made sure that they made it exciting. Brent Staab jumped out to an early lead. He started to distance himself from the rest of the field, but as quickly as he gained that gap he lost it. As lap traffic allowed Bents to lessen the gap and challenge for the lead. Staab would go on to hold on and pick up his first feature win on the year.
Hadley Elevator IMCA Hobby Stock The hobby feature marked the return of Slayton’s own Derek Platt in his 35 car. He would look to make his return a grand one with a feature win. After starting the race on the outside of row one, Platt quickly took the lead. Eric Gillette in the 12 and Jeremy Van Ede in the 00X would try to spoil Platts return. Throughout the whole race, Gillette and Van Ede would give Platt everything they had. Platt showed that no one would spoil his return as he went wire-to-wire to pick up his first feature win on the season. Look for Platt to be a contender each race as the season progresses.
R&H Sealcoating IMCA Sport Modifides The race for the championship in this class is already shaping up to be an exciting one. Coming into the night Adam Ecker in the 8 car and Randy Hook in the 17 car were tied for the points lead, so either one was hoping to get the advantage. Josh Bonnstetter in the 80 car quickly pulled away from the pole position. It looked as if he would be hard to catch, but a miscue in turn 4 surrendered the lead to Randy Hook. Bonnstetter found himself a ways back, but started to make up ground near the end the race. On the last lap, Bonnstetter would make one last attempt at taking the feature win away from Hook, but there wasn’t quite enough time and Randy Hook would go on to take home the feature win with Bonnstetter a close second.
Sign Pro IMCA Stock Car Dominick Bruns Memorial Race The Dominick Bruns Memorial Race was the race that everyone was anxious to see. More than two dozen cars lined up for the feature race, and all of them were eyeing the feature win. Right after the green flag dropped an intense battle for the lead ensued between the 5L of Dustin Larson and the 2 car of Troy Winter. The two racers were putting on an amazing show for the crowd very early in the race. After an early caution, the two picked up right where they left off. However Dustin Larson would eventually get around Winter and take the lead. As soon as he was around Winter, he began to pull away. While he was pulling away, his brother Jeff Larson in the 7L began to charge to the front. Jeff soon found himself in a battle with Winter, and would soon pass Winter for third position. After a late caution, Jeff Larson looked to give his brother Dustin a challenge for the lead. However Dustin Larson once again started to pull away until another caution flag flew. This set up a green white checkered finish to determine the winner. On the restart Jeff Larson tried to challenge Dustin one more time. Unfortunately, Jeff was unsuccessful and Dustin Larson went on to win the Dominick Bruns Memorial race. Jeff Larson would take home second, and James Richert in the 83 car would take home third. The race sponsors for July 13th, is Jim Kluis Crop Insurance Specialists of Slayton.
